Contrary to popular belief, Narwhals don’t use their tusks to spear fish, or to break through the ice when they are trapped. Actually, the tusk is hollow for most of its length and very brittle; many adult Narwhals have been seen with broken tusks., probably a result of “fencing” with other Narwhals during mating rituals. Narwhals travel in pods, hunting squid, cod and other small fish.
